Regeneration of a train station square

The project seeks to transform the square at Reggio Emilia train station from a fragmented, transitional space into a generous urban scenography. Visual and physical barriers are carefully removed to open up the space and enhance accessibility, while traffic flow is radically reimagined: the once constrained station arrival expands outward, reaching the surrounding buildings and turning the entire area into a vast urban foyer.
Thinking of Renaissance squares and the metaphysical visions of De Chirico, the design unfolds as a broad, uninterrupted horizontal surface—composed of stabilized earth aggregates enriched with colorful mineral fragments and cocciopesto—evoking the soft, earthy red tones of Emilia’s landscape.
Within this ground plane, acting as a theatrical stage, a constellation of essential actors —benches, fountains, lighting, trees, and the stairwell to underground parking—begin to interact, shaping zones of varying character, rhythm, and exposure.
The result is a metaphysical, artificial landscape, providing an expressive backdrop for the daily choreography of the city.
